tips & tricks

current works, originally uploaded by tanisalexis.

‘Tis the season for some learning! 🙂 I recently participated in Nanaimo’s first Swap-o-rama-rama, and met so many new people all looking to learn some new tips and tricks about how to upcycle their shunken and worn out old sweaters. My completed project was felt fascinators for the hair, all put together with a bunch of needle felting, but once those needles came out it was apparent that most people wanted to ditch the project and make something of their very own. one woman made a big patch to pin on her coat shaped like an eye. It was awesome to see what people created.
With this in mind and realizing I have a whole load of information about felt making bumping around in my head, as well as a giant vial full of brand new felting needles (Thanks Moxie!) that it would be a shame to not open this fun up on a more regular basis.
You see, the problem I have had in the past with planning these sorts of workshops is the idea factory I run in my brain…it never stops…I treat the learning process in the same way I treat the creating process, instinctively, intuitively, naturally…
these will be open classes.
to participate, you will need to sign up with me for any of the dates times I have open (see below) and I’ll send you a list of basic materials you need to bring.  (as well as a minimum fee* of $15 which includes supplies and guidance on your project. )

don’t have an idea for what you want to make? have something specific in mind that you want help with? I provide assistance with all things wool felt and together we discuss the merits as well as design the project together if need be. 🙂
I offer one-on-one fully custom classes for the felt/fiber lover who is interested in delving deep with me and exploring the many facets of wool & felt.**

Assist me on a large project or we design something of our very own, and you will take your project home.

Based on discussions through email or on the phone we will decide what our goals are, gather resources and plan for a whole big explosive time together felting our hearts out. (Small deposit and pre-registration required)
Good music, yummy snacks to keep us fueled and a big imagination are mandatory, please bring yours and I’ll bring mine. 🙂
Plan a ladies afternoon, a small birthday gathering, a special treat for yourself or just a blissful time to learn a new art.

**wool felt is the earliest fabric known to man, and predates spun and woven fabric. wool felt is created by the friction of fibres rubbing up against one another in order to bind closely and tangle to make a sturdy, warm and versatile fabric. two main types of felt making are dry felting (needle) and wet felting, a combination of these techniques along with a variety of materials and supplies the possibilities of felt making and design are endless!

*** located in beautiful Nanaimo on Vancouver Island in B.C. Canada. Guest rooms available for out of town guests with preregistration, phone confirmation and deposit. Too far away to visit? See some of my online tutorials available here.

happy felting everyone! and much love.

oh creative goodness!

Not so many blog posts around here I admit, and I have many, numerous, unavoidable excuses. None worth repeating here, as it will wind up sounding a little bit lame and very repetative. I don’t get to create quite enough in this new mommyhood I am enjoying.

The thing is, there are slots of time reserved for myself as the wee one naps but I usually find myself under a pile of housework, or worse, procrastinating about projects to do. Since it seems once I get elbow deep in a project, the wee one wakes up, and I have to leave the half-finished mess for later. A wee bit disheartening to say the least. My artistic muse is NOT impressed by this. I have to tell ‘it’ that there is another baby in the house now. hahaha.

I will get over it of course, once things are back in order here in this disaster of a house… but I do find time to peruse artwork of all sorts by so many amazing talents around the internet.

Flickr.com never ceases to amaze me in the vastness of visual eye candy.

Click on the picture above to take you to the original posting on my flickr photostream..most of the artists are connected there, and you can follow those little pathways into a whole universe of great creative work…down the rabbit hole we go!

thanks so much for being patient with me, until I find some balance and a NEW HOME this Summertime (which equals= MORE SPACE!) this will surely help in the total organization of my life and my family’s life.

Best wishes to you and see you soon!
xo!

p.s. Ok, I’m not being completely honest about my creative time. I have been cooking lots, and hope to post about that soon. It seems I can lose myself quite well in the kitchen, and knowing that eating is a neccessity, drives me to create delicious healty and wholesome meals for my little family.

Happy New Year friends!!!
I am finally getting back to some normal paced activities after a long exhausting holiday and autumn.
Our little baby bean was born September 26th and we spent the next couple of months in a delirilous newborn/new parent state. surreal is not a big enough word to describe it. we’re sleepily and madly in love with our new baby girl.

so now that the holidays are behind us, & a fresh new slate ahead, I am trying to jump back up on the horse and get a much as I can get done during nap-times.
This includes finishing off a heap of half-finished projects I found recently (including above photo) and to get listing some new creative objects into my etsy shop.

I hope this new year of 2010 is filled to the brim with heart felt wishes come true for all of us.
Lots of love
xoxo

Bounty.

Sept 5th farmers market, originally uploaded by tanisalexis.

Hush now child,
and don’t you cry
Your folks might understand you
by and by
Move on up
towards your destination
You may find
from time to time
Complications

Bite your lip
and take a trip
Though there may be
wet road ahead
You cannot slip
Just move on up
and peace you will find
Into the steeple
of beautiful people
Where there’s only one kind

So hush now child
and don’t you cry
Your folks might understand you
by and by
Just move on up
and keep on wishing
Remember your dreams
are your only schemes
So keep on pushing
Take nothing less –
not even second best
And do not obey –
you must have your say
You can past the test

Move on up

Curtis Mayfield – Move On Up

This song by Curis Mayfield is playing in the background as I gear myself up for this blog post.

I am not sure why it’s been so incredibly challenging to try to post regularily here. But I know I do have many excuses. Time being one of them, and then there’s that pesky voice in the back of my head that says: “well that blog-post idea wouldn’t be very interesting to read.”

and so the battle continues.

Time certainly flies. Only moments ago it was the start of Summertime, one of my favourite times of year, full of warmth, colour, vibrant antics, and lots of sunshine. This year though it’s a different kind of embrace for me. My energy is in reserve, tapped from the slightest chore, or small feat..sending me back to my bed to sleep the time away and re-energize. It also takes time to get to know my new self in all of this. Growing babies is hard work. Though physically I don’t need to tell my body what to do and how to grow this little bean in my belly, it still takes energy, patience, time and faith.

We’re fortunate to have the local and one of the larger city farmers markets a mere minutes walk away from our front door. Every Saturday morning we stroll over to the market and make our pick out of the fabulous selection of fruits, veggies and foodstuffs for our weeks diet. I feel lucky we can live in an area that can produce such variety, such abundance, and such amazing, healthy colour. It brings the ‘squirrel’ out in me around this time of year, and I get a tiny bit frantic knowing that this freshness will not be fully available to us for much longer. I yearn to can, to freeze, to preserve and to concoct delicious tidbits to enjoy during the cold months.

I’ve been spending more time in the kitchen whipping up yummies rather than in the studio whipping up artful goodies. Because my energy dictates my mode. Call it a slow mode. Similar to the Slow food movement. A slow life.

I also have this same theme occuring in my business/art life as the Art Show and Craft Fair applications come tumbling into my email inbox. I know I just can’t commit this time around. I am saving myself for the mysteries of motherhood, the wintertime hibernations, the slow life of doing things on a different time. Re-aquainting myself with, myself.

So I will try my best to continue my regular posts, but can’t promise anything. This coming Autumn/Winter brings many question marks and I am finally embracing the ‘out-of-control’ feelings I have now with the world. The one true wisdom of many I’ve gleaned this Summertime is that no one is really in FULL control of their worlds.. we can maintain a sense of balance and sureness and goals to head somewhere we dream..but we are never in full control of how those goals will come to us. I feel good about this.

It concocts a sense of wonder, curiosity, and innocence to me and my little world. I hope it does for you too.

In the meantime, I am not too far away. I am still here, I am still online checking up on things, keeping my hands in the pots of goodness that abound in the wonderful worlds of art & craft..

Be sure to check out my flickr photostream, where I do post photos regularily. I’ve built up a nice world of contacts and friends there. A truly supportive and inspiring environment to get lost in. Flickr is my blog too, because sometimes, photo’s are a lot easier for me than words.

I wish you all love, happiness and wonderment. Happy changing Seasons!

xoxo!

Graffiti necklace – a giveaway!!!

and about time too, huh?

sorry for the delays friends, life is tripping me up a bit with all the newness&change with baby bird arriving this fall, plus my computer gets very angry in the summer heat so she needs a nice siesta in the afternoons.. just like I do! lol.

this fun piece is available to someone special…could it be you???

a collaboration of my sketchy & painty skills along with tomate d’epingles’ words & jewelry design came up with a delightful, fun and surprising project for all of us. I primed and painted about 40+ wooden circles with poetry and quotes in a not-too-serious kind of way..once dry, I sent them all out to the girls in Quebec for them to create unique pieces to wear. & out came a whole series of necklaces for their customers & clients!!

this is a really fun and whimsical trinket packed up in all signature eco-friendly packaging to adorn your neck! (psst….I’m throwing in a wee arty secret treat made from my 2 hands for you to enjoy with your necklace also-double the fun! )

all that is required for the special someone to recieve this in their letter box, is to go to both tomate d’epingles blog, to read some of the fabulous things they’ve published and to make a comment in the comments section of one of their articles. easy peasy, done & done!

then come back here and make a comment, with your email, on this very post.

I’ll throw everyone into the random.org generator, shake it to mix thoroughly & see who comes up!!

lucky lucky for somebody!!

this offer will go until end of this month. and I will contact the special someone by email for mailing details and announce it here when I can!

best summery wishes everyone!

July 30th update: With this heat wave we’re having, and my holidays coming up any day now, I’ve decided to extend the deadline of this giveaway until August 15th. More chances for you to enter and win!! big summer loves to you! xo!
