Well, hello there….

Hello there stranger…

It’s been a long time hasn’t it?

I know…I’m sorry…I’ve thought about you often, amongst chaotic moments, big decisions, and new frontiers…you  haven’t been far away in my mind.

I have so many stories to tell & not nearly enough time in a day to get everything I have my heart set on accomplished.

I am only stopping in here a short spell, to share some news and updates, and ….whoosh!!! Off I go again…
My sweet little family and I have relocated to Vancouver Island and I am celebrating this new life we have here, with more space, more openness, lots of garden and more opportunity to dream…..

& on that note……..

Handmade Felt Workshops!

Finally, with spring & summer at our doorsteps, & after many moments of pondering, I am happy to be able to have the extra space to open my doors to those interested in learning how to make handmade felt with me.

The classes are structured to be fully customized for your own interests, which I think is the best part, with a primer in the basic skills of wet & dry felting techniques to get you started.

We then dive into my glorious stash of soft wools, fibres and treats & have some fun.

Would you like to join me?

Together we’ll explore the magic of felting.

some of the topics we cover are:
obtaining three dimensional organic shapes,

felting flat surfaces & surface design,

nuno/laminate fabrics,

incorporating dry felting into wet felting, using moulds & resists to create three dimensional objects.

(not ALL topics will be covered in one class, but we will try to cover most subjects, with an opportunity to come back & learn more! ) See more below!

First, if you are unsure what handmade felt and felting is, here are a few bits of info for you: (thank you wikipedia)
Felt is a non-woven cloth that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing woollen fibres.

While some types of felt are very soft, some are tough enough to form construction materials. Felt can be of any colour, and made into any shape or size.

Wet felting is combining carded wool fibres with friction and lubrication by moisture (usually soapy water). This “wet” process takes advantage of the inherent nature of wool and other animal hairs.

It is this combination which reacts to the friction of the felting process, forcing the scales on the hairs to lock together and thus causing the phenomenon of felting.

Dry felting Needle felting is a popular fibre arts craft conducted without the use of water. Special barbed felting needles that are used in industrial felting machines are used by the artist as a sculpting tool. Using a single needle or a small group of needles (2-5) in a hand-held tool, these needles are used to sculpt the wool fibre. The barbs catch the scales on the fibre and push them through the layers of wool, tangling them and binding them together, much like the wet felting process.

work in progress

cells, originally uploaded by tanisalexis.

the title to this post could be a song for the soundtrack of my life. it’s where I’m at most days, but particularily in the field of creativity.
I’ve said it all too many times so I won’t continue with it, but time eludes me. I am gaining quite a bit more balance with life now that my wee one is 9 months old. there is finally a chance to understand that crazy word: ‘routine’ that all those baby advisors tell you about from day 1. and trust me, it wasn’t easy. both the wee one and myself had to figure lots of things out before we fell into the lap of ‘routine’. I can understand now why people talk about it so much when parenthood arrives..it’s so much easier to maintain a little bit of sanity when ‘routine’ is kicking around!!

so I’ve had some wonderful people approach me about some custom orders in the last few months. these are understanding, loving and appreciative people who know what I do, love what I do, and respect these moments of crazy that a new mom occasionally has. it’s a beautiful thing.
above is a photo of a current ongoing project on my hands. I call them cells. more like, big, fuzzy, wooly stitched circles on circles. a perfect pile of creative projects that I can pick up when time allows.. stitching an edge, adding a little flair, or tacking on more cirles…the person who has requested them had left colours up to me which is a nice bonus. They would like about a dozen, so I’ve cut out more than I need and maybe if I have some leftover from the order, I can post them into my shop later on. (which is a whole other story about time management! hey, this is progress, friends!! hahaha!)

more soon! xo

Happy New Year friends!!!
I am finally getting back to some normal paced activities after a long exhausting holiday and autumn.
Our little baby bean was born September 26th and we spent the next couple of months in a delirilous newborn/new parent state. surreal is not a big enough word to describe it. we’re sleepily and madly in love with our new baby girl.

so now that the holidays are behind us, & a fresh new slate ahead, I am trying to jump back up on the horse and get a much as I can get done during nap-times.
This includes finishing off a heap of half-finished projects I found recently (including above photo) and to get listing some new creative objects into my etsy shop.

I hope this new year of 2010 is filled to the brim with heart felt wishes come true for all of us.
Lots of love
xoxo
