Learning time! Workshops for Spring

14237772293_7cfd159cf2_o

Learn how to craft a wet felted wool vessel.
Wool is often seen as a therapeutic material for warmth, to soothe and comfort, and to heal pain. It is a versatile natural material that can carry half its weight in water, is fire resistant, muffles sound and is a superb insulator.
During the felting process the fibres are manipulated in such a way to be coaxed and then forced with friction and pure hard labour to alchemize into a strong and very versatile fabric…one of the first textiles made!

In this class we will create a round wool felt container and discuss the ideas of containment as a safe place. A creative visualization is part of the class and we will explore the many aspects of fibre based textiles.
We will discuss the ancient properties and traditions of wool felt and the symbols of containers in our life.

tips & tricks

current works, originally uploaded by tanisalexis.

‘Tis the season for some learning! 🙂 I recently participated in Nanaimo’s first Swap-o-rama-rama, and met so many new people all looking to learn some new tips and tricks about how to upcycle their shunken and worn out old sweaters. My completed project was felt fascinators for the hair, all put together with a bunch of needle felting, but once those needles came out it was apparent that most people wanted to ditch the project and make something of their very own. one woman made a big patch to pin on her coat shaped like an eye. It was awesome to see what people created.
With this in mind and realizing I have a whole load of information about felt making bumping around in my head, as well as a giant vial full of brand new felting needles (Thanks Moxie!) that it would be a shame to not open this fun up on a more regular basis.
You see, the problem I have had in the past with planning these sorts of workshops is the idea factory I run in my brain…it never stops…I treat the learning process in the same way I treat the creating process, instinctively, intuitively, naturally…
these will be open classes.
to participate, you will need to sign up with me for any of the dates times I have open (see below) and I’ll send you a list of basic materials you need to bring.  (as well as a minimum fee* of $15 which includes supplies and guidance on your project. )

don’t have an idea for what you want to make? have something specific in mind that you want help with? I provide assistance with all things wool felt and together we discuss the merits as well as design the project together if need be. 🙂
I offer one-on-one fully custom classes for the felt/fiber lover who is interested in delving deep with me and exploring the many facets of wool & felt.**

Assist me on a large project or we design something of our very own, and you will take your project home.

Based on discussions through email or on the phone we will decide what our goals are, gather resources and plan for a whole big explosive time together felting our hearts out. (Small deposit and pre-registration required)
Good music, yummy snacks to keep us fueled and a big imagination are mandatory, please bring yours and I’ll bring mine. 🙂
Plan a ladies afternoon, a small birthday gathering, a special treat for yourself or just a blissful time to learn a new art.

**wool felt is the earliest fabric known to man, and predates spun and woven fabric. wool felt is created by the friction of fibres rubbing up against one another in order to bind closely and tangle to make a sturdy, warm and versatile fabric. two main types of felt making are dry felting (needle) and wet felting, a combination of these techniques along with a variety of materials and supplies the possibilities of felt making and design are endless!

happy felting everyone! and much love.

Well, hello there….

Hello there stranger…

It’s been a long time hasn’t it?

I know…I’m sorry…I’ve thought about you often, amongst chaotic moments, big decisions, and new frontiers…you  haven’t been far away in my mind.

I have so many stories to tell & not nearly enough time in a day to get everything I have my heart set on accomplished.

I am only stopping in here a short spell, to share some news and updates, and ….whoosh!!! Off I go again…
My sweet little family and I have relocated to Vancouver Island and I am celebrating this new life we have here, with more space, more openness, lots of garden and more opportunity to dream…..

& on that note……..

Handmade Felt Workshops!

Finally, with spring & summer at our doorsteps, & after many moments of pondering, I am happy to be able to have the extra space to open my doors to those interested in learning how to make handmade felt with me.

The classes are structured to be fully customized for your own interests, which I think is the best part, with a primer in the basic skills of wet & dry felting techniques to get you started.

We then dive into my glorious stash of soft wools, fibres and treats & have some fun.

Would you like to join me?

Together we’ll explore the magic of felting.

some of the topics we cover are:
obtaining three dimensional organic shapes,

felting flat surfaces & surface design,

nuno/laminate fabrics,

incorporating dry felting into wet felting, using moulds & resists to create three dimensional objects.

(not ALL topics will be covered in one class, but we will try to cover most subjects, with an opportunity to come back & learn more! ) See more below!

First, if you are unsure what handmade felt and felting is, here are a few bits of info for you: (thank you wikipedia)
Felt is a non-woven cloth that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing woollen fibres.

While some types of felt are very soft, some are tough enough to form construction materials. Felt can be of any colour, and made into any shape or size.

Wet felting is combining carded wool fibres with friction and lubrication by moisture (usually soapy water). This “wet” process takes advantage of the inherent nature of wool and other animal hairs.

It is this combination which reacts to the friction of the felting process, forcing the scales on the hairs to lock together and thus causing the phenomenon of felting.

Dry felting Needle felting is a popular fibre arts craft conducted without the use of water. Special barbed felting needles that are used in industrial felting machines are used by the artist as a sculpting tool. Using a single needle or a small group of needles (2-5) in a hand-held tool, these needles are used to sculpt the wool fibre. The barbs catch the scales on the fibre and push them through the layers of wool, tangling them and binding them together, much like the wet felting process.
